Marshall Ulrich’s Seventh Commandment of Endurance: KNOW THAT THERE WILL BE AN END It will not last forever. I remember when I ran my first race; 40 miles on Arkansas trails. I was definitely not trained for it, but I didn’t know that. It got so hard that I was crawling up hills at mile 20. Everything in me wanted to quit. As the day wore on, mile after mile I kept saying to myself, “10 miles for the rest of your life, 9 miles for the rest of your life, 8 miles for the rest of your life.” Whether I decided to quit or continue on, that decision gets carved in stone for the rest of eternity. That one decision will affect the rest of your decisions for the rest of your life. I finished that race 6 minutes under the cut off time, the suffering ended, and now I get to tell the story of how I persevered. The following year I returned to finish the same race more than 2 hours faster. Then I ran a 100 mile trail race and had a similar experience to the first 40 miler. The pain will go away. The story lasts forever. 6 DAYS!! It is inevitable that bad things will happen, and it’s paramount to feel their impact, but equally paramount to just move on, and do the next best thing to improve the situation. This fits perfectly with the third commandment — “Don’t dwell on the negative.” 8 miles felt amazing this morning. It’s so crispy out there. This is the point the running community calls ‘the wall.’ It usually presents itself around the 20th mile of a marathon when the body decides it’s done enough. The wall hurts, the mind wants to give in to the body’s pleading, but if you can stay in the game and get past the wall, you can find a new gear.
